9 Nkwanta SHS students arrested for vandalism over confiscation of their mobile phones
.
According to school authorities, the confiscation of mobile phones was prompted by students' frequent distractions during lessons.
This led the administration to conduct a search and seizure operation class by class to retrieve the devices, a report by UTV on May 14, 2025, said.
However, the action taken by the authorities angered and infuriated the students, who in response stormed the school premises in protest.
The demonstration escalated into violence, resulting in the destruction of school buses, teachers’ bungalows, and other properties.
The report added that due to the severity of the violent protest, school authorities requested the intervention of the Ghana Police Service.
The police responded promptly, preventing further escalation of the unrest and restoring calm on the school premises, the report added.
Following the arrival of the police, several arrests were also reportedly made, with the individuals placed in custody.
Meanwhile, a number of students have absconded, significantly disrupting academic activities on campus.
The incident has reportedly also left the authorities of Nkwanta Senior High School deeply traumatised.
Of particular concern is the alarming development in which some students reportedly took knives and cutlasses from the school’s storage facility.
The whereabouts of both the students and the weapons remain unknown, leaving teachers and staff increasingly anxious about the motives behind this act and the potential risks it poses.
The school authorities have since issued an appeal to parents and guardians, urging them to return their wards to school, especially as some of the students are candidates preparing to sit for their upcoming examinations.
